How can you make Tummy Time easier for your baby?

Tummy Time can be really tough for some babies :baby:. Here are some of our tips :tipping_hand_woman: to help make tummy time easier for your tot.

Here are some simple ways to make tummy time more enjoyable

:yellow_square: Newborns: One of the most soothing and least frustrating ways to have your newborn tolerate lying on his belly is to lay him on your chest when you are in a reclined position. The rhythmic rise and fall provides comfort and support, while the skin-to-skin contact helps to refine his sense of touch.

:yellow_square: 1-3 month olds: Roll a small towel and prop it horizontally under your baby’s armpits, giving support to his upper chest. This will help him keep this head up in order to view his surroundings. Get down at eye-level :eyes:—he loves to look at you! :hearts:

:yellow_square: 4 months and beyond: At this point, your baby should be able to maintain “tummy time” (prone position) for longer periods and with less frustration. During this time, place him on a blanket in a safe, clutter-free space, with some motivating toys :teddy_bear:, or give him a mirror to look at himself. Watch as he begins to wiggle and shift his weight in order to explore his environment, all while getting a total body workout :weight_lifting_man: !

While designating specific “tummy-time” is important, we never want to extend the session to a point of real distress. If your baby whines or seems mildly uncomfortable, try to switch around some toys or sing songs to help him feel more relaxed. If he has made it clear he’s had enough, don’t worry! He is still getting plenty of benefits from frequent small doses of only a few minutes at a time.

BOTTOM LINE: TUMMY TIME IS NOT EASY, BUT GETTING STARTED RIGHT FROM BIRTH, USING OUR RECOMMENDED ADAPTIVE POSITIONS, AND MAKING IT FUN WITH TOYS AND INTERACTIVE PLAY CAN HELP YOUR LITTLE ONE ENJOY THIS CRITICAL TIME!

Even better!

We love this topic and babies! Thank you Mary and Allison for the mention, the tips mentioned above are great! We always suggest to take off babies socks in tummy time on the floor, so those little feet and toes get a lot of sensory exploration as well!

Tummy time can be challenging for both mom and baby, don’t ever feel like you have to “push” your baby through tummy time. Observe and respond to their cues, frequency not duration is key, when your baby is awake and happy, go to the floor for some practice!
