Hand flapping

Hello, do you know if hand flapping is always a correlation of autism?
My 12 month old hand flaps pretty often. I’m not sure if this is typical or not.

Hi @Ashremar, welcome!
It’s not ALWAYS a correlation, although many children with autism do flap their hands, or exhibit some other steroptypic behaviors. See if you notice other difficulties such as a lack of eye contact, not responding to his/her name or other sounds in the environment, and lack of gesturing/pointing to focus your attention on something that he/she wants. I would also definitely bring this up to your pediatrician. In my pediatricians office, they offer screening tools to help with early identification. Reaching out to your pediatrician is the best next step.
